Annual Meeting Program Overview

The annual meeting takes place over a 5 day period held in August every year in different cities across the US and Canada. The conference is comprised of several activities throughout 5 days to provide a great learning experience whether you’re a student or seasoned faculty.

Overview of events held at the Annual Meeting

Professional Development Workshop Program:
Held on Friday- Saturday

PDW Chair: Paul S. Adler, University of Southern California
Submission deadline: January 10, 2012 at 5:00 PM New York Time

The Professional Development Workshops run from Friday to Saturday from 8 am – 8 pm each day, with additional All-Academy Theme Workshops scheduled on Sunday. The purpose of a PDW is to provide members with experiences that update and develop their professional skills related to research, teaching, and professional practice such as consulting. PDWs are distinct from scholarly programs in their personal and professional skill orientation. In addition to the long standing tradition of doctoral student consortia and junior faculty workshops, PDWs have included tutorials, panels, debates, round table discussions, and even off-site visits to companies. As long as an event brings learning value to the participants in terms of skill enhancement related to their professional activities, the sky is the limit. Skills are better enhanced through active engagement in discussion or experiential activities rather than passive listening. PDWs offer an excellent opportunity to move outside the boundary of a single division to explore issues and ideas across divisions. PDWs are excellent opportunities to learn about research and teaching practices in other countries and to develop potential collaborative projects. They can be a vehicle to bridge research and practice by engaging practitioners and scholars in dialogues on their mutual challenges and aspirations.

All-Academy Theme Program:
Held on Sunday
Program Chair: Bat Batjargal, Harvard University
Submission deadline: January 10, 2012 at 5:00 PM New York Time

The All-Academy Theme program runs on Sunday from 11am until 6pm. All-Academy Theme sessions consist of PDWs and Symposia. These sessions will address issues of broad interest to all members of the Academy, and are directly related to the conference theme, “The Informal Economy.” Our goal is to provide sessions that will stimulate you to think new thoughts and act in new ways. These sessions are not for people who want to just sit back and listen; they are for people who want to be actively involved.

Scholarly Program:
Held on Monday through Tuesday
Program Chair: R. Duane Ireland, Texas A&M University
Submission deadline: January 10, 2012 at 5:00 PM New York Time

The Scholarly program runs from Monday to Tuesday from 8 am – 5 pm each day with additional All-Academy Theme Symposia scheduled on Sunday. The Scholarly Program consists of three main components: Paper sessions, Symposia, and Caucuses. The Scholarly Program joins people, ideas, and expertise together from all around the world to teach, learn, create, and disseminate knowledge about management.
