AOM Members Publish Groundbreaking African-American Management History Research

          Leon Prieto and Simone Phipps

Most Management scholars are quite familiar with both Henri Fayol’s 14 principles of management (and his functions of management) and Frederick Taylor’s principles of scientific management. However, a name that may sound unfamiliar is that of Charles Clinton Spaulding and his 8 Fundamental Necessities of Management. A recent archival study conducted by AOM members Leon Prieto and Simone Phipps uncovered a 1927 article written by Spaulding, entitled “The Administration of Big Business” that outlined Spaulding’s eight “fundamental necessities” for effectively managing a business. Based on that archival finding they were inspired to write a paper entitled Rediscovering Charles Clinton Spaulding’s “The Administration of Big Business”: Insight into early 20th Century African-American Management Thoughtwhich was recently published in the Journal of Management History. The research article showed that C. C. Spaulding, had his own philosophy of Administrative Management before the writings of Henri Fayol (General and Industrial Management) were translated into English. Five prominent Management textbooks will soon feature the contributions of Spaulding in the near future.
