INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT (IM)

2024 Division Scholarly Program: Call for Submissions
Program Chair: Klaus Meyer, Ivey Business School

The International Management (IM) Division invites submissions of papers and symposia for the 84th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (AOM 2024) held in person in Chicago 9-13 August 2024. The theme for the AOM 2024 is Innovating for the Future: Policy, Purpose, and Organizations, should be particularly salient to the IM Division as international connections often play a key role in shaping innovations and their consequences.

The International Management (IM) Division of the Academy of Management brings together a global community of scholars researching and teaching management themes with a cross-border or cross-cultural dimension. These include the influence of the context (e.g., geopolitical and technological changes) on international management and the contribution of management to addressing global social and environmental challenges. Members of the IM community conduct research on themes such as:

  • the cross-border management of operations, including multi-country, multi-unit, strategy formulation, and implementation;
  • the cross-border differential impact of cultural, social, economic, technological, political, and other institutional forces on strategies, organizational forms, and management practices;
  • evolving forms and management practices in cross-border business using physical and virtual channels supporting international business activities;
  • the international competitiveness of entrepreneurs, firms, industries, and nations;
  • comparative management studies involving two or more countries;
  • the impact of multinational enterprises on the societies in which they operate, and their contribution to global challenges such as social inequalities and climate change.

The AOM 2024 theme, Innovating for the Future: Policy, Purpose, and Organizations, raises many research questions of concern to IM scholars, such as:

  • How can entrepreneurs effectively roll out innovations optimized in one national context to other contexts with divergent stakeholder expectations and regulatory institutions?
  • How can MNEs innovate business models to reflect local social and environmental priorities, while maintaining integrated global value chains and unified global practices and purpose?
  • How do MNEs effectively manage global knowledge resources for innovation when faced with geopolitically motivated barriers to knowledge sharing?
  • How can MNEs collaborate with local policy makers to develop and implement innovative approaches to global Grand Challenges?
  • How can organizations develop shared purpose globally when facing divergent cultures and societal priorities on social and environmental issues?
  • What factors impede or stimulate international entrepreneurship that is aimed at developing innovative solutions to Grand Challenges?
  • How can culturally diverse teams be managed to accelerate responsible innovation?

Please consider submitting symposium proposals that explore any of these questions applying international perspectives and a variety of theoretical lenses. Symposia offer a great opportunity to examine interfaces by engaging in  meaningful and highly interactive dialog among the panelists and with the audience.
