AOM and The PhD Project: Empowering Diversity Among Management Students, Scholars, and Administrators

Since 1997, The Academy of Management (AOM) has partnered with The PhD Project, a national nonprofit organization that works to increase diversity in the business world. Through its unique model, The PhD Project’s Black/African American, Latinx/Hispanic American, and Native American members pursue business PhDs with the intent to become university faculty, teaching, guiding and mentoring historically underrepresented business students. Since its inception in 1994, The PhD Project has been responsible for sextupling the number of historically underrepresented professors, administrators, and academic leaders at an extensive list of academic programs in the U.S.

Twenty-six PhD Project members have served in leadership roles at AOM over the years, including Ian O. Williamson, Dean at University of California, Irvine –The Paul Merage School of Business.

As the newly elected AOM Board of Governors’ Representative-at-Large, Ian explains the partnership between both organizations serves as a key piece in developing individuals’ understanding of the profession:

“It helps create important network ties and helps individuals understand the breadth of career options available within the academy. For AOM, The PhD Project represents an important pipeline of talent that will continue to rejuvenate the professorial ranks. The PhD Project is also an extremely successful innovation in doctoral education. The participants in The Project have higher than average completion rates, job placement outcomes and research outcomes. Thus, The PhD Project can help the AOM continue to evolve doctoral education.”

AOM member Julian Birkinshaw has been named the next Dean of Ivey Business School. His five-year appointment is effective 1 August 2024.

Birkinshaw joins Western from the London Business School in the U.K., where he’s held a variety of posts for the past 25 years, most recently as Vice-Dean.

A Fellow of the British Academy, Strategic Management Society and the Academy of Management, Birkinshaw holds honorary degrees from Copenhagen Business School and the Stockholm School of Economics.

When he decided to advance his studies in business, he was keen to study in North America, “the home of the MBA.”

“Doing my MBA at Ivey was very formative. I loved it,” Birkinshaw said. So much so that he remained at Western to pursue his PhD in business administration. His doctoral work saw him place as a finalist for the Richard N. Farmer international business award in 1995 and as winner of the Barry M. Richman award in 1996.

It also marked Birkinshaw’s beginnings as “a believer in innovation and agility,” key aspects he believes business firms ─ and business schools ─ should embrace to stay relevant in a time of rapid change and disruption.

PDW Event Recap
Tackling Challenging Management (Education) Problems Through Research: an AMLE ‘Impact’ Event

This 8 December event showcased pathways through which researcher engagement with wider stakeholders can improve practice at work or in management education. It also provided a forum in which academics can learn from practitioners about current challenges at work (and where perhaps academics can offer solutions).

The event included keynote speeches by Andrew Hill (senior business writer at the Financial Times and consulting editor, FT Live) and Elizabeth Heichler (editorial director at MIT Sloan Management Review). Four AMLE authors shared their experiences concerning engagement efforts with practice before and/or following the publication of their articles. Also Professor André Spicer contributed a “Dean’s” perspective on impact to the event.
