Awards and Recognition
Each year, the Academy of Management (AOM) presents awards to members in recognition of outstanding contributions, professional accomplishments, and distinguished service at AOM’s Annual Meeting. Awards are distinguished by the breadth and length of the work.
All-Academy Awards are presented at AOM’s Annual Meeting. Most recently, awards were presented for the most outstanding journal articles (see Publication Awards for more information), lifetime achievement and contributions to the field of management (see Career Achievement Awards below), the George R. Terry Book Award as well as Division and Interest Group Awards (see Annual Annual Awards below), and Best Paper and Community Awards (see Program Awards below).
Award Descriptions
Distinguished Educator Award
The Distinguished Educator Award is one of four lifetime career achievement awards presented at AOM’s Annual Meeting. Over the course of a career, the Distinguished Educator has made significant contributions in one or more of the following areas:
- Developing doctoral students
- Teaching effectively
- Fostering pedagogical innovations
- Developing effective methods, structure, and designs

Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award is one of four lifetime career achievement awards presented at AOM Annual Meeting. Over the course of a career, the Distinguished Service Award recipient has made significant contributions in one or more of the following areas:
- Enhancing a field of study
- Founding or creatively editing a scholarly journal
- Unusually effective service to a major professional institution

Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner Award
The Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner Award is one of four lifetime career achievement awards presented at the AOM Annual Meeting. Over the course of a career, the Distinguished Scholar-Practitioner Award recipient has made significant contributions in one or more of the following areas:
- Successful application of theory or research in practice and/or contributed to knowledge through extraction of learning from practice
- Authored scholarly works which have substantially affected the practice of management
- Integration of research and practice
- Their work will be respected by peers (both practitioner and academic)

Distinguished Scholarly Contributions to Management Award
The Distinguished Scholarly Contributions to Management Award is one of four lifetime career achievement awards presented at the AOM Annual Meeting. Over the course of a career, the Distinguished Scholarly Contributions to Management Award recipient has made significant contributions in one or more of the following areas:
- Conceptual, empirical, or theoretical developments
- Create and disseminate new knowledge
- Advance management knowledge and practice

George R. Terry Book Award
The George R. Terry Book Award is granted annually to the book judged to have made the most outstanding contribution to the advancement of management knowledge, and meets the following criteria:
- Book published within the last two years
- Judged to have made the most outstanding contribution to the advancement of management knowledge
- Contribution can be to management theory, conceptualization, research, or practice

Divisions and Interest Groups Awards
Each division or interest group has responsibility for administering its awards program. Awards at this level are presented at the business meeting of the division or interest group, or another venue considered appropriate by the unit initiating the award. Honorees are announced in annual issues of the Academy News newsletter:

William H. Newman Award for Best Paper Based on a Dissertation
The William H. Newman Award is presented to the best Annual Meeting paper based on a recent dissertation. The recipient of this award:
- Addresses a significant organizational phenomenon
- Shows appropriate consideration of relevant theoretical and empirical literature
- Offers reasonable interpretations of the research results, draws appropriate inferences about the theoretical and applied implications of the results, and suggests promising directions for future research
- Yields information that is both practically and theoretically relevant and important
- Presented logically, succinctly, and clearly
Division program committees select one submission each year to nominate for this prestigious award.
William H. Newman Award Committee
Carolyn Dexter Award for Best International Paper
The Carolyn Dexter Award is presented to the annual meeting paper that best meets the objective of internationalizing AOM. This award is now overseen by an award selection committee.
Papers are considered for this prestigious award if they offer new insights, are rich in observation and employ creative methodologies. Papers receiving this honor typically reflect collaboration between scholars from different countries, topics that are not in the U.S. mainstream, but are important in other countries' research traditions, and whose theme and content reflect an awareness of business and management outside of domestic boundaries.
