Amy Colbert

Amy Colbert, AOM member and Tippie College of Business professor of management and entrepreneurship, has been named recipients of the 2024 University of Iowa Distinguished Chair.

The accolade represents one of the most prestigious honors granted to faculty members at Iowa. It acknowledges scholars who are distinguished nationally and globally, and who have made significant contributions to the university, the state of Iowa, and beyond through outstanding achievements in research, teaching, and/or service. Those selected for the honor receive additional financial resources to support their professional activities, enabling them to further extend their scholarly impact.

Colbert has published articles in top scholarly journals, such as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Personnel Psychology, and Administrative Science Quarterly. She is also recognized at the top of her field as a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association of Psychological Science, and the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

Michael Frese

Asia Business School’s Professor and AOM Member Michael Frese, a leading figure in the field of entrepreneurship research, has been awarded the prestigious Global Entrepreneurship Award in Stockholm, Sweden.

Established in 1996, the Award celebrates exceptional research that has profoundly shaped the field, and acknowledges Professor Frese’s ground-breaking research and significant contribution of psychology to entrepreneurship theory and to small business development as well as training research for entrepreneurship.

“I am absolutely delighted to accept the Award,” said Professor Frese.

His research delves into the psychological factors that drive entrepreneurial actions and success. He pointed out that his personal motivation for his life’s work stems from his desire to use entrepreneurship research as a powerful tool for poverty reduction: “As a psychologist I wanted to contribute to the economic growth of less-privileged countries. I envisioned empowering individuals through entrepreneurship to actively participate in their country’s economic development."

Julian Birkinshaw

AOM member Julian Birkinshaw has been named the next Dean of Ivey Business School. His five-year appointment is effective 1 August 2024.

Birkinshaw joins Western from the London Business School in the U.K., where he’s held a variety of posts for the past 25 years, most recently as Vice-Dean.

A Fellow of the British Academy, Strategic Management Society and the Academy of Management, Birkinshaw holds honorary degrees from Copenhagen Business School and the Stockholm School of Economics.

When he decided to advance his studies in business, he was keen to study in North America, “the home of the MBA.”

“Doing my MBA at Ivey was very formative. I loved it,” Birkinshaw said. So much so that he remained at Western to pursue his PhD in business administration. His doctoral work saw him place as a finalist for the Richard N. Farmer international business award in 1995 and as winner of the Barry M. Richman award in 1996.

It also marked Birkinshaw’s beginnings as “a believer in innovation and agility,” key aspects he believes business firms ─ and business schools ─ should embrace to stay relevant in a time of rapid change and disruption.

Jean-François Harvey

AOM member and Associate Professor in the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Jean-François Harvey has been appointed Lead Editor for a special issue of the prestigious scientific journal Organization Science.

Jean-François Harvey said he was honored by this recognition:

“I am honoured to serve as Lead Editor for the special issue of Organization Science. This represents a unique opportunity to draw together cutting-edge research focused on building a psychologically safe climate in an increasingly digital and socially complex world. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, we hope to shed light on innovative solutions to current organizational challenges.”

Jean-François Harvey joined the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at HEC Montréal after completing 2 years of postdoctoral studies in management at the Harvard Business School. Today he holds a research professorship in organizational learning, where he seeks to better understand how individuals, teams and organizations learn and adapt, especially in uncertain and ambiguous contexts. He uses both qualitative and quantitative methodologies to develop knowledge on the subject.

His most recent works have appeared in Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Annals and Journal of Organizational Behavior.

Christopher Collins

Christopher Colins Named 2023 NAHR Fellow

The National Academy of Human Resources inducted Christopher Collins to its fellowship program considered the most prestigious recognition of HR career excellence. Christopher Collins is professor and director of graduate studies at the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.

Daniel Marsili, president of NAHR, said that Collins “demonstrated dedication to the field of human resources, had enormous impact in leadership roles and in supporting the elevation of the human resource profession.” 

“There aren’t a lot of moments where people remind you that the work you have done has had an impact,” Collins says.

Xue Zhou

AOM Member Dr. Xue Zhou Receives High Commendations At The 2023 British Academy Of Management (BAM) Awards

The British Academy of Management made a series of awards during their 37th annual conference at the University of Sussex, to celebrate outstanding contributions made by business and management scholars, not just through their research but also the important contributions to society they have made.

Dr. Xue Zhou was highly commended for the project titled "Transforming BSc Business Management for Inclusion through Authentic Learning and Peer-Led Teaching and Learning". The project aimed to address inequalities in student outcomes of the School of Business and Management, BSc Business Management program.

Allison Gabriel

Allison Gabriel was named the Thomas J. Howatt Chair in Management at Purdue University. Her research focuses on emotions, motivation, interpersonal stressors/relationships and employee well-being at work. She serves as faculty director of the new Center for Working Well, which she helped originate and which aims to understand and address challenges facing modern workforces and employees’ desire to “work well.

Allison is a member of the HR, OB, and RM Divisions, an AOM Subject Matter Expert, and has been the recipient of multiple awards at AOM, including the 2021 Organizational Behavior Division Cummings Scholarly Achievement Award, the 2020 Human Resources Division Early Career Award, and the 2019 Sage Publications/Research Methods Division/Lawrence R. James Early Career Achievement Award.

Debra Shapiro

Debra Shapiro, the Clarice Smith Professor of Management and Organization at the University of Maryland, received the 2023 International Association for Conflict Management's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Debra is an AOM Past President, member of numerous AOM Committees, winner of the AOM Career Achievement Award and William H. Newman Award for Best Dissertation, and a member of the CM and OB divisions.

Rajshree Agarwal

Rajshree Agarwal, Rudolph Lamone Chair of Strategy and Entrepreneurship and Director of the Ed Snider Center for Enterprise and Markets at the University of Maryland, was appointed to the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee. It advises the directors of the Department of Commerce's statistical agencies (the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the U.S. Census Bureau) and the commissioner of the Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Rajshree was the recipient of the AMJ Best Article Award in 2005 and a member of the ENT, STR, and TIM divisions.

Alma McCarthy

University of Galway’s Professor Alma McCarthy has been recognized for her contribution to academia, research, and leadership and honored with the Fellowship of the Irish Academy of Management. Alma, Dean of the University’s J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics, was awarded the prestigious Fellowship at the Irish Academy of Management annual conference, held at the University, for her remarkable achievements and dedication to her field and contributions which serve as inspiration to academics, professionals, and aspiring leaders across Ireland.

Charles Dhanaraj

Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business has appointed Charles Dhanaraj as academic director of its Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program. In this role, Charles' responsibilities include enhancing Robinson’s global reputation for producing practitioner-researchers working as senior-level decision-makers in business as graduates of the college’s professional doctoral program.

Bringing with him decades of experience as an academic leader, Charles has taught in institutions across the world, spanning countries such as India, Singapore, Canada, Switzerland, and the U.S. He joins Robinson from the University of Denver.

Corine Boon

University Of Amsterdam Appoints Professor Of HRM and People Analytics At The ABS. The Executive Board (CvB) has appointed Corine Boon as professor of HRM & People Analytics at the Amsterdam Business School (ABS). Corine's research focuses mainly on the design and implementation of strategic HRM in organizations, people analytics, and person-environment fit (the relationship between an individual’s characteristics and values ​​and the environment in which they work). To better understand how organizations can use strategic HRM effectively, she uses advanced analytics techniques and data (for example, large data sets of companies, or text data). She also studies the consequences of Artificial Intelligence for HRM, managers and employees in organizations.

Anil K. Gupta

Anil K. Gupta, Michael D. Dingman Chair in Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business has received the 2023 CK Prahalad Award for Scholarly Impact on Practice from the Strategic Management Society (SMS)

The award, established in 2011, recognizes “excellence in the application of theory and research in practice” and “contributions [that] have shaped the understanding of global strategic leadership.”

According to SMS, Gupta’s “work in the areas of globalization and global strategy, innovation and entrepreneurship, and digital strategy lies at the intersection of important phenomena in strategic management, key theoretical ideas, and grounded empirical work.”

Gupta has addressed the World Economic Forum multiple times on globalization and on high growth markets such as India and China. Ranked by Thinkers50 as one of the “world’s most influential management thinkers,” he also is one of just three professors elected by his peers as a Lifetime Fellow of the world’s three most prestigious bodies of scholars in the field – Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, and Academy of International Business.

Imran Chowdhury

After a national search, Imran Chowdhury, was selected as the next dean of Catawba College Ketner School of Business. He begins his new role on Sept. 18. 

“Dr. Chowdhury is an energetic leader who possesses a unique array of talents and experiences that made him the right fit for Ketner,” said Dr. David P. Nelson, President of Catawba College. “I’m grateful Dr. Chowdhury will lead Ketner School of Business into its very bright future.” 

Chowdhury holds the Diana Davis Spencer Chair in Social Entrepreneurship at Wheaton College in Massachusetts. He previously served as a tenured Associate Professor at Pace University and has held visiting positions at Freie Universität Berlin (Germany); Montpellier Business School (France); CEFAM Business School (France); and ESSEC Asia-Pacific (Singapore).

Yu-Kai Lin

Yu-Kai Lin, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Information Systems (CIS) and the Center for Digital Innovation at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business, has received the Early Career Award from the Association for Information Systems (AIS). The award, which was presented at the International Conference on Information Systems in Copenhagen, recognizes individuals in the beginning stages of their career who have already made outstanding research, teaching, and/or service contributions to the field of information systems.
 
Yu-Kai's research and teaching interests are centered around making predictions or inferences based on large-scale structured and unstructured data. He studies topics including digital innovation, open-source projects, intellectual property, crowdfunding, health information technology, and business analytics. His work has been published in MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Organization Science, and the Journal of Management Information Systems, among others.
 
“It is truly an honor to receive this prestigious award,” Lin said. “I am very grateful for my wonderful colleagues in the CIS Department and the Center for Digital Innovation, who have offered tremendous support and guidance in my early career development.”

Ranjay Gulati

Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) has appointed Ranjay Gulati as Independent Director.

Ranjay comes with a rich understanding of business strategy and is a professor at Harvard Business School. He is an expert on organizational growth and recently chaired the Advanced Management Program, the school’s flagship Senior Leader Executive Program.

“It is a privilege to join the Board of such an iconic company. HUL is one of the best and most respected consumer goods companies in the country. I look forward to my role as an Independent Director”, said Ranjay.

Cynthia E. Devers

Cynthia E. Devers, R.B. Pamplin Professor of Management in the Pamplin College of Business’s Management Department, has been named the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Management.

Cynthia's research examines the influence of formal and informal governance mechanisms, social evaluations, and individual differences on managerial decision-making and individual and organizational outcomes.

“I'm a strategy scholar, but I really research how people make decisions,” said Cynthia. “I try to understand how people make decisions in high-level organizational contexts such as top management teams and boards of directors.”

Cynthia previously served as an associate editor for Academy of Management Review. She is a member of the Managerial and Organizational Cognition, Organization and Management Theory, Research Methods, and Strategic Management Divisions of AOM.

Paul Hibbert from the University of St Andrews School of Management has been appointed Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS). Paul is among 56 leading social scientists who have been conferred Fellowship this spring.

Richard DeJordy

Rich DeJordy was named the new chair of the Department of Management at RIT's Saunders College of Business. He came to RIT after serving in a similar role at the Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno. Before that, DeJordy was a faculty member at D’Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University. Rich has taught a wide range of courses across leadership, organizational behavior, and social networks—focusing his research on social networks and organizations.
 
His most recent study explored how Nicolas Hayek and Jean-Claude Biver synthesized two very different strategic responses to the so-called “Quartz Crisis” that faced the Swiss watchmaking industry in the latter half of the last century.

Jeffrey Harrison

Jeffrey Harrison, was honored with the Outstanding Faculty Award from State Council of Higher Education, the highest honor for faculty at Virginia's public and private colleges and universities.

Jeffrey is a University Distinguished Educator and Scholar and the W. David Robbins Chair of Strategic Management in the Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond. His primary research objective is to infuse strategic management with stakeholder theory. In addition to his many books and articles, he has co-authored more than 20 business cases with his students and have been used free-of-charge all over the world.

Hung-Bin Ding

Hung-bin Ding, associate dean for academics and professor of management at Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business and Management, was appointed chair of the Maryland Governor’s Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs. Ding was first named to the commission in 2015. Established in 1992, the commission assists the governor and state agencies in responding to the needs and concerns of Maryland citizens with ancestral heritage in Asian and Pacific Rim countries. Ding leads the commission of 18 voting members appointed by the governor. In addition to his roles as associate dean and professor at Loyola’s Sellinger School, Hung-bin has served as chair of the management and international business department, director of international partnerships for Sellinger, and academic director of the Emerging Leaders MBA. Peter Younkin

The University of Oregon Lundquist College of Business honored Peter Younkin with the Stewart Distinguished Faculty Award, the college’s top academic honor. In his nomination letter, David Wagner, head of the Department of Management, described how Peter, associate professor of management and Inman Research Scholar at the Lundquist College of Business, produces work of the highest quality.

“His writing is thoughtful and his research examines important phenomena,” said Wagner. “Younkin studies entrepreneurship—a critical driver of economic development—but more particularly entrepreneurial activity by and funding of entrepreneurs from traditionally underrepresented groups. Over the last three years, he has published or had accepted six papers in elite management journals Organization Science and Management Science.”

UK-based Nigerian Researcher Puts Africa In The Limelight With Paper On I-deals Dotun Ayeni's research, conducted for over two years in the UK and in Nigeria, examines employer and employee perspectives on i-deals; through the point of view of participants working in service-oriented organizations. Due to advancements in technology evidenced by increased automation and a growth in demand for employees with skills in the area of critical thinking, data analytics, and problem-solving, Nigeria has witnessed glaring skills shortage, so much so that employers are doing all they can to hold on to talent, including granting and offering i-deals. "As the world of work continues to change rapidly and the employer-employee dynamic witnesses a reinvention and reimagination, I believe the management field will benefit by paying attention to nuances shaping the African experience of i-deals and its management", stated Dotun.

In an episode of Oven-Ready HR, Chris Taylor talks to organisational culture and employee wellbeing expert Professor Sir Cary Cooper about hybrid working and how the ‘great resignation’ has a lot to do with poor leadership.

Cary remarks that a significant driver of the so called ‘great resignation’ was in part employees’ dissatisfaction with their boss. He thinks this has led some in HR to think about whether they have managers with the right skills in place. He also takes us back to the psychological contract and tells us to look at hybrid in a different way.

Sarfraz Mian

Sarfraz Mian of SUNY Oswego’s Management and Marketing Department recently earned the rank of SUNY Distinguished Professor for his global achievements in research, publications and academics.

“Dr. Mian has earned a worldwide reputation in the area of business incubation and entrepreneurship,” his nominators wrote. “Dr. Mian has published four scholarly books, multiple chapters in scholarly books, and over fifty peer reviewed journal articles. He also has presented his research work at numerous international conferences. He has research collaborations with scholars all over the world.”

Gary Latham

Gary Latham of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management is the 2022 recipient of the Dave Ulrich Impact Award for his contributions to broadly advancing the practice of human resource management. Gary is the Secretary of State Professor of Organizational Behaviour at the Rotman School.

Gary received AOM's George R. Terry Book award, the William H. Newman Award for Best Dissertation, and the Career Achievement Award. He is also an AOM Fellow and a member of the HR and OB divisions.

Belle Rose Ragins

Belle Rose Ragins has been named University of Wisconsin-Madison distinguished professor. Belle is the Sheldon B. Lubar Professor of Management in the Lubar College of Business. She is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of mentoring, diversity and positive relationships at work. Her research has garnered over 23,000 citations, and she is included in Stanford University’s list of the top 2% of the world’s most cited researchers. Her current research examines diversity training, the effectiveness of formal mentoring and allyship at work.

Belle served as editor-in-chief for the Academy of Management Review, a member of the Diversity Task Force, an OM Fellow, and is a member of the CAR, GDO, HR and OB divisions.

The Network Science Society (NetSci) has named Northwestern Engineering’s Noshir Contractor as one of its 2022 NetSci fellows.

The Fellowship Program of the Network Science Society recognizes investigators who have made outstanding and significant contributions to network science research and to the community of network scientists. The fellowship is annually awarded to a select number of members from the community based on their exceptional life-long individual contributions to any area of network science research and to the community of network scientists locally and globally.

Noshir is a member of the CTO and TIM divisions.
