MANAGEMENT HISTORY (MH)
We encourage collaboration with colleagues both within and outside the Management History (MH) Division in developing proposals for the Professional Development Workshop (PDW) sessions, which are scheduled between Friday (August 5, 2022) and Tuesday (August 9, 2022). The MH Division is seeking proposals for the PDW sessions for the 2022 Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting that is aligned with the theme, "Creating A Better World Together.” Given our current political, social, and economic environment, this is a fitting and timely theme. At present, our world is divided along religious, racial, ideological, and economic lines. Events such as the ongoing COVID pandemic, supply chain issues, and inflation, as well as trends such as climate change, systematic racism, and growing inequality are increasing these divisions. History can provide valuable lessons from the past on how previous generations have dealt with similar problems.
A common and growing criticism is that our work does not address issues that confront managers and that, as a field, our scholarly work is separated from the ongoing issues with which we are confronted. Management education and research can and should play a key role in addressing these issues. Our PDW provides a unique opportunity to addresses these issues from a historical standpoint. For example, how managers and scholars handled exogenous shocks in past crises - Great Depression, World War I and II, the Cold War, the Great Influenza Epidemic of 1918-1919, and the anti-slavery abolition movement - can provide key lessons that will be benefit practicing managers, educators, students, and scholars. Accordingly, our PDW and conference provides a unique opportunity to share and discuss information and perspectives about these seemingly intractable issues.
The Management History division embraces a broad and multi-theoretical approach to the role of history and historical methods in understanding management, organizations, and business. PDW sessions provide an interactive and developmental opportunity to expand the confines of regular scholarly practice and challenge nostrums through provocative and unexplored areas of research. We are inclusive and not only seek submissions from management, business, and organizational historians, but also from those without historical training who may have a historical perspective or interest.
In submitting your PDW proposal, please review the submission guidelines to ensure that your submission complies with the guidelines in all details. The submission deadline is Tuesday, 11 January 2022, 5 p.m. ET (NY time) through the Academy’s Submission Center. Feel free to contact the MH PDW Chair, Jeffrey Muldoon if you have any questions or would like to discuss your prospective PDW proposal. All proposals require a statement indicating that all PDW participants have consented to participate in the PDW. The AOM’s “Rule of Three” for the PDW program is that “no one may submit or be associated with more than 3 PDW submissions. Proposals that violate these rules may be rejected. Because space and time allotted for PDW sessions is limited, we cannot guarantee acceptance of all proposals. We look forward to seeing you virtually and especially in-person.
