Technology & Innovation Management (TIM)

2024 Division PDW Program: Call for Submissions

PDW Chair: Valentina Tartari, House of Innovation, Stockholm School of Economics

The Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) Division invites innovative proposals for pre-conference Professional Development Workshops (PDWs) within the 84th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (AOM 2024), which will be held from Friday, 9 August 2024 until Tuesday, 13 August 2024 in Chicago, IL, USA.  PDWs will be taking place Friday, 9 August through Sunday, 11 August 2024.

PDW sessions provide excellent opportunities for exploring emerging research questions or methods, trying out new workshop formats, and fostering conversations on important but understudied phenomena. They can use a variety of formats––methods workshops, tutorials, debates, roundtable discussions, town hall meetings, to name a few––and address ideas or phenomena that might not (yet) fit in the regular program. PDW sessions should engage participants to develop their professional skills and be relevant to scholars interested in topics central to innovation, research and development, and the management of technology.

We aim for a program, innovative, and highly interactive PDWs that will attract members of the TIM community. TIM members represent a wide range of disciplines and draw from an array of theoretical and empirical research paradigms. More information about the division is available on the TIM website.

We invite submissions related to the AOM 2024 conference theme, "Innovating for the Future”.  TIM members have much to contribute to this year’s theme as our interests revolve around technology and innovation, inside and outside of firms and other organizations, and how they contribute to societal and economic change.

We also encourage PDWs that focus on topics of perennial interest to TIM members, such as: artificial intelligence as a tool for executing and to study innovation processes; managing science and technology professionals, R&D activities, intellectual property and knowledge; open innovation, ecosystem, and platform strategies; geographic influences on, emergence of, and advantages from entrepreneurial ecosystems; technological change and the emergence of new technologies, markets, and business models; strategies for diffusing and capturing value from new technologies; entrepreneur- and technology-based economic growth policies; academic entrepreneurship and university technology transfer; micro-foundations of invention and innovation; practice of and strategies for invention and commercialization.

Acceptance of proposals for TIM PDWs will be based on (a) relevance to the interests of the Division's membership; (b) novelty and creativity; and (c) plans for creating an interactive, inclusive, and engaging session. We also welcome proposals that identify other Divisions and Interest Groups as co-sponsors, although that is not a requirement for acceptance.

PDW proposals may be submitted via the AOM Submission Center beginning early December 2023. Early submissions are encouraged. The deadline for submissions is  Tuesday, 9 January 2024 at 17:00 ET (UTC-5/GMT-5). All named PDW participants must commit to participation in advance. All proposals require a statement indicating that all named participants have consented to participate in the PDW. AOM’s “Rule of Three” for the PDW program is that “no one may submit or be associated with more than 3 PDW submissions; or appear in more than 3 PDW sessions during the conference.”
