Doing What You Love Creates a Halo Effect to Your Boss

Some people work for the paycheck. Others feel called to do certain work for a higher purpose. Turns out, managers are more likely to see those with a calling orientation as better people in general. That “halo effect” also colors managers’ perceptions—and misperceptions—that calling-oriented employees are more committed to their organizations and better performers.

Throughout their careers, workers are expected to continually master new skills and improve their capabilities. Good work design plays a critical role in developing an enriching work environment that helps “old dogs learn new tricks” and preserves cognitive functioning as workers age.

The #MeToo Movement has spotlighted sexual harassment in the workplace and the urgency to ensure that organizations provide safe, respectful work environments. But exactly where is that line between behaviors people might think are fun or funny and sexual harassment?

Many researchers have studied how U.S. executives’ political ideologies can affect firm outcomes. But in an Academy of Management Journal article, researchers analyzed political ideologies among executives in Iran, “a political context that sharply deviates from the exclusively studied U.S. context.”
