Bureaucracy: The Necessity We Love to Hate

“While people may lament the proliferation of red tape, in the next breath, many complain that ‘There ought to be a rule’; they grumble about hierarchy, but in the next breath ask, ‘Who’s in charge around here?’” AOM scholars point out.

Employees don’t always get to implement their own ideas. Yet ideas that get handed off to others often lose their creative spark because the implementers don’t fully embrace the projects as their own, especially when handoffs occur late in the game, according to an Academy of Management Journal article.

AOM scholars discover that when a supervisor and subordinate pair both had disabilities, or when neither had disabilities, their relationships were fine. But when a supervisor had a disability and the subordinate did not, or vice versa, they reported poorer relationships.
