Goal 2: Providing Indispensable Value

DRIVING GOAL 1     /      DRIVING GOAL 2     /      DRIVING GOAL 3     /      DRIVING GOAL 4

AOM is providing indispensable value to a diverse membership characterized by extensive professional services, vibrant volunteerism, interactive communities, and reimagined governance.

What does that mean for our volunteers and member communities?

In 2023, the Academy faced a unique array of global challenges, yet the resilience and commitment of our international community have been pivotal in sustaining AOM's progress. Our ongoing mission to connect members through scholarship and teaching in management and organization has remained at the forefront of our efforts. Our member community's active engagement has enabled us to successfully meet our objectives and explore innovative initiatives, further enhancing our impact in management.

As we prepare for 2024, our strategic focus is to deepen our understanding of the values and priorities of our global members. We aim to enhance our support for members throughout every stage of their professional career. By refining our services and offerings, we are committed to effectively addressing the diverse needs of our community and fostering their continued development and success.

Division and Interest Groups

Members benefit from involvement in the Academy’s 26 Divisions and Interest Groups (DIGs). Divisions and Interest Groups provide disciplinary “home bases” where members connect and collaborate around specific management domains. These active communities offer a broad range of services tailored to members with interests in a specific management discipline.

In 2023, the Management, Spirituality, and Religion (MSR) Division formally transitioned from an Interest Group to a Division following a member vote approving division status and the AOM Board of Governor’s subsequent confirmation.

Division & Interest Group Reviews

Together, the AOM Board and DIG leadership share responsibility for strengthening the Academy and serving the needs of members. As such, they have a responsibility to develop a strategic agenda, assess progress, and update the agenda over time. In that spirit, the Board of Governors approved the Division and Interest Group Relations Committee (DIGR) recommendation for re-envisioning the content and process of the DIG 5 Year Review that includes:

  • A streamlined process with less administration and an opportunity for real-time accounting/adjusting of strategic priorities.
  • Improving leadership continuity as result of revising the process to a 3-year recurrence.
  • Stakeholder orientation – guidelines for leadership accountability, planning, and reporting.
  • Cross-DIG communication, collaboration, and sharing of key learnings & best practices.
  • Two-way (DIG-AOM) developmental dialogue related to report feedback.
  • Opportunities for more frequent dialogue or interactions among DIG leaders and BOG.

Now, every three years, the Academy’s Divisions and Interest Groups are reviewed by a group of DIG leaders and members of the Board serving on the Division and Interest Group Relations Committee.

In 2023, the following five divisions were the initial cohort of DIGs to follow the new guidelines. Click on each division for their Strategic Review Reports.

Inaugural Cross-DIG Strategic Sharing Forum

In her communication to DIG Leaders announcing key changes to the DIG Review structure, President Amy Hillman highlighted feedback received from DIG Leaders indicating optimism for cross-DIG communication, collaboration, and sharing of key learnings and best practices. To address the strong DIG appetite for cross-DIG sharing opportunities, the Division and Interest Group Relations (DIGR) committee facilitated the inaugural Cross-DIG Strategic Sharing Forum at the Academy's 83rd Annual Meeting in Boston.

The Cross-DIG Strategic Sharing Forum provided the Academy's 26 unique Division and Interest Groups with an opportunity to share best practices, innovations, and strategic activities with each other, i.e., fellow DIG leaders and volunteers.

Six divisions and interest groups – CAR, HR, MOC, MSR, SAP, and STR – gave presentations followed by an open forum.
