Jay Barney, Editor
Jay Barney is a Presidential Professor of Strategic Management and holds the Lassonde Chair of Social Entrepreneurship at the Eccles School of Business at The University of Utah. He also currently serves as the Chair of the Entrepreneurship and Strategy Department. Before joining The University of Utah in 2012, Professor Barney served on the faculty at The Ohio State University for 18 years, where he held the Chase Chair in Corporate Strategy. Prior to Ohio State, he served on the faculties at Texas A&M University and UCLA. Professor Barney has also had honorary faculty appointments at Waikato University (in New Zealand); Peking University, Sun Yat-Sen University, and Nankai University (all in China); and Brunel University (in the UK).
Professor Barney received an undergraduate degree from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. from Yale University. He has also received three honorary doctorate degrees—from Lund University (in Sweden), from the Copenhagen Business School, and from the Universidad Pontificia Comillas (in Spain).
Professor Barney's research focuses on the relationship between firm resources and capabilities and a firm's ability to gain and sustain a competitive advantage. He has published over 100 articles—including some of the most cited articles in the field of strategic management—and six books. His books have been translated into six languages. He has also presented scholarly papers at the Wharton School of Business, the Harvard Business School, the Tuck School of Business, and the London Business School and at over 100 other universities around the world.
In 2005, Professor Barney won the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award of the Business Policy and Strategy Division of the Academy of Management. In 2010, he won the Scholarly Contributions Award for the Academy of Management. He has also been elected as a fellow of the Academy of Management and of the Strategic Management Society.
Professor Barney teaches strategic management to undergraduate, MBA, Executive MBA, and Executive students. He has won awards for his teaching at UCLA, Texas A&M, and Ohio State, and has published two strategic management textbooks, one in its fourth edition, the other in its fifth edition.
Professor Barney has served on the Executive Committee and as an officer of the Business Policy and Strategy Division of the Academy of Management. He has also served on the Board and as an officer of the Strategic Management Society. He was an associate editor at the Journal of Management, a senior editor at Organization Science, a co-editor at Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, and serves on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Strategic Management Journal.
Professor Barney has also consulted with over 50 public and private organizations, including Hewlett Packard, Texas Instruments, Nationwide Insurance, and Columbus Public Schools. Much of his work focuses on helping boards of directors evaluate their firm's strategies. He also works with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to apply lessons learned from business and entrepreneurship to address abject poverty around the world.
Professor Barney lives in Park City, Utah, is married and has three children and nine grandchildren.

Allan Afuah, Associate Editor
Allan Afuah is Professor of Corporate Strategy and International Business at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He received his PhD from MIT. Professor Afuah's awards include the 2012 AMR Best Article Winner for the paper Crowdsourcing as a solution to distant search, and a past MBA Teacher of the Year Award winner at Michigan. His research focuses on business model innovation, crowdsourcing, game-changing innovations, multi-sided platforms, open innovation and strategic innovation with an eye on exploring theoretically interesting questions about the drivers and consequences of performance differences among organizations and their ecosystems. His work has been published in the Academy of Management Annals, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Research Policy, Industrial and Corporate Change, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, and Sloan Management Review. His sixth book, Business Model Innovation, incorporates concepts such as crowdsourcing, the long tail, social media, disruptive technologies, open innovation, and less-is-more innovations. His second book, Internet Business Models and Strategies (co-authored with Christopher Tucci) has been translated into more than nine different languages, and has been adopted by dozens of schools to teach business models. His first book, Innovation Management, has also been translated into several languages including Chinese.
Sharon Alvarez, Associate Editor
Dr. Sharon Alvarez is the Thomas W. Olofson Chair in Entrepreneurial Studies at the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh. She previously served as the Walter Koch Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at the Daniels College of Business, University of Denver and prior to that as an Associate Professor of entrepreneurship and management, and the Academic Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship at the Max M. Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University. Professor Alvarez is the Past Chair of the Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management and was the Denver Program Chair for the 2015 Strategic Management Society meetings as well as Representative at Large for the SMS Entrepreneurship Interest Group. She was a Max Planck Scholar at the Max Planck Institute for Entrepreneurship and Economic Systems Research. She has been a visiting professor at Sun-Yet-Sen University in China, at the University of Alberta, and the University of Utah. Her current research includes entrepreneurship theory of opportunities, firm, and market emergence. Professor Alvarez is an associate editor for Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and she has published in Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Strategic Management Journal, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Management, and Human Resource Management Journal. Her paper, "Discovery and Creation: Alternative Theories of Entrepreneurial Action" won the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal Best Paper Award. Her paper, "How Entrepreneurs Organize under Conditions of Uncertainty" won the Journal of Management Best Paper Award. Her Journal of Management paper, "The Entrepreneurship of Resource-based Theory" is the 27th most cited article for Journal of Management in the last 50 years.
John Amis, Associate Editor
John M. Amis is Professor of Strategic Management and Organisation at the University of Edinburgh Business School. He received his PhD from the University of Alberta. His research interests center on issues of large-scale organizational, institutional and social change. John has had over 70 book chapters and articles published in journals that include Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, American Journal of Public Health, Human Relations, Organization Science, Organization Studies and Organizational Research Methods. In addition to AMR, John sits on a number of other editorial boards including Organization Studies, Organizational Research Methods and Strategic Organization. His most recent book, Race, Economics and the Politics of Educational Change (co-edited with Paul Wright), published in 2018, provides a multi-disciplinary investigation of the recent Memphis-Shelby County school district merger, the largest in US history. He also co-edited a recent Special Issue of Organization Studies titled "Inequality, institutions and organizations" (with Tom Lawrence, Kamal Munir, Paul Hirsch and Anita McGahan). John has previously studied, among other things, the development and implementation of policies designed to address childhood obesity, large-scale change in innovation processes in a Fortune 100 firm, and transformation of the Canadian Olympic sport system. His current empirical work is focused on issues of inequality, reforms to the Scottish civil justice system, and major change at a Scottish charity. He is past Chair of the Academy of Management's Organization Development & Change division.
Joel Baum, Associate Editor
Joel A.C. Baum is a Professor of Strategic Management in the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, where he holds the George E. Connell Chair in Organizations and Society, and recently completed an eight-year term as Associate Dean, Faculty. His research has focused on patterns of competition and cooperation among firms and their influence on firm behavior and learning, the causes and consequences of legitimacy, and many other topics, in industries including investment banking, biotechnology, private military services, and open source software production. In 2010, he received the award for the most impactful article in the Journal of Business Venturing, and in 2011, he received the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Organization and Management Theory Division of the Academy of Management, for which he had earlier served as Program and Division Chair. Also in 2011, he was elected a Fellow of the Academy of Management. He was a founding co-editor of Strategic Organization, served for over a decade as editor-in-chief of Advances in Strategic Management, and currently serves on the editorial board of the Strategic Management Journal.
Cristina Gibson, Associate Editor
Cristina B. Gibson is Dean's Distinguished Professor of Management at the Graziadio Business School, Pepperdine University. Her expertise is at the nexus of organizational science, international management, and cross-cultural psychology. She is the one of the world's preeminent scholar on global collaboration, multicultural teams, and technological connectivity. Her work develops and tests theories and practical techniques for the shared use of information and knowledge, expanding social cognitive theories to the group level, and incorporating context. She has dispelled conventional assumptions that collaborative phenomena operate the same way across contexts, identifying intercultural variations, impacts of geographical dispersion, and technology factors that are important in gaining a full understanding of how to increase the effectiveness of collaborations.
Cristina's research has appeared in 75 publications, including in prestigious journals such as Journal of International Business Studies, Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, and Journal of Applied Psychology. She is among the top 1% in the world in terms of impact in the fields of Economic and Business based on citation counts between 2004–2016 and she has received over $5.5 million dollars in external funding for her research from granting institutions such as the Australian Research Council and U.S. National Science Foundation. In 2016, she and her colleagues were awarded the Academy of International Business Paper of the Decade Award. She is also the recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Innovation and Impact in Research, and a Fellow of the Society of Industrial Organizational Psychology and the Academy of International Business.
Cristina's work has informed organizational policy, structure, training and development agendas improving operational efficiency, innovation, resource allocation, and well-being, in non-profits, entrepreneurial firms, and large multinationals such as General Electric, Johnson & Johnson, Qantas and Westpac, across over 20 countries.
Heather Haveman, Associate Editor
Heather A. Haveman is Professor of Sociology and Business at the University of California, Berkeley. She received a BA in history and an MBA in management and finance from the University of Toronto, and a PhD in Organizational Behavior and Industrial Relations from UC Berkeley. Before coming to Berkeley in 2006, she taught at Duke (1990–94), Cornell (1994–99), and Columbia (1998–2007). When she's not moving around North America, she studies how organizations, industries, and employees' careers evolve, and the impact of organizations on their employees and society at large. Her work combines insights from institutionalism, organizational demography, social movements, economic geography, micro economics, and social history. Her published studies have investigated California thrifts (1872–1928 and 1960s–1990s), Iowa telephone companies (1900–1917), Manhattan hotels (1898–1990), California hospitals (1978–1991), U.S. electric power plants (1980–1992), U.S. wineries (1940s–1990s), American magazines (1741–1860), American law-school professors, and Chinese listed firms (1992–2007). These studies have appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, the American Sociological Review, the American Journal of Sociology, the Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, the Journal of Business Venturing, Management and Organization Review, Organization Science, Poetics, Research in the Sociology of Organizations, Research in the Sociology of Work, and Sociological Science, as well as in several edited books. Her book, Magazines and the Making of America: Modernization, Community, and Print Culture 1741–1860, was published by Princeton University Press in 2015. Her current research involves American magazines, U.S. wineries, American law-school professors, Chinese firms, and state-legal marijuana markets.
Peter Kim, Associate Editor
Peter H. Kim is a Professor of Management and Organization at the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business. He is the Chair of the Academy of Management's Conflict Management Division (2017-2018), has served on the Administrative Board for the International Association for Conflict Management, is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Trust Research, and has served on the Editorial Boards for several other journals including the International Journal of Conflict Management, Negotiation and Conflict Management Research, Organization Science, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. He has a PhD from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management and has held visiting positions at Washington University in St. Louis and INSEAD. Peter's research concerns the dynamics of interpersonal perceptions and their implications for negotiations, work groups, and dispute resolution, with particular attention to matters of trust and its repair after a violation. His work examines how these perceptions develop and go awry, their divergent effects on behavior, what happens when we communicate these perceptions to others, and the ways in which these perceptions can be managed and/or changed. This research has been published in many leading management and psychology journals, including the Academy of Management Review, Harvard Business Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Management Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, and Strategic Management Journal. This research has also received ten national/international awards, including the 2011 Most Influential Article Award by the Academy of Management's Conflict Management Division, and has been reported in a wide range of media outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, and National Public Radio.
Joseph Mahoney, Associate Editor
Joseph T. Mahoney earned a BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, with a doctorate in Business Economics from the Wharton School of Business. He joined the College of Business of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1988, and is currently Professor of Strategy & Entrepreneurship, and Caterpillar Chair of Business.
Joe's research interest is organizational economics, which includes: transaction costs theory, agency theory, dynamic capabilities and resource-based theory, real-options theory, property rights theory, stakeholder theory, and the behavioral theory of the firm. He has published over 70 articles in journal outlets, including: Academy of Management Review, Industrial and Corporate Change, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Science, Research Policy, Production and Operations Management, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, Strategic Management Journal, and Strategic Organization. His publications have been cited over 3,100 times in the Web of Science, and over 14,700 times according to Google Scholar from scholars in over 80 countries. In 2005, he published his Sage book intended for first-year doctoral students in the Strategy field: Economic Foundations of Strategy. This research book has been adopted by over 35 doctoral programs domestically and internationally. Joe has served on 67 completed doctoral dissertation committees, and is currently serving on committees for 8 dissertations in progress.
Joe served three 3-year terms as Associate Editor of the Strategy field's flagship journal, Strategic Management Journal (2006–2015). He currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Management Studies, Strategic Organization, and has served on the editorial board of the Academy of Management Review. For the academic-year 2008–2009, he served as Chair of the Business Policy and Strategy (BPS) Division of the Academy of Management. In 2011, he received the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award from the BPS Division of the Academy of Management. In 2012, he was elected as a member of the Academy of Management (AOM) Fellows. In 2013, he was elected as a Fellow of the Strategic Management Society (SMS).
Elizabeth Mannix, Associate Editor
Professor Mannix's research and teaching is focused on effective team performance, power & influence, negotiation, principled leadership, organizational change and diversity. She is the author of over 50 articles, published in journals such as: The Journal of Applied Psychology, The Academy of Management Review, The Journal of Experimental Psychology, Psychological Science in the Public Interest, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, and The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Recent publications include: "What differences make a difference? The promise and reality of diverse teams in organizations"published in Psychological Science in the Public Interest and reprinted in Scientific American Mind, as well as the 15 volume book series, Research on Managing Groups and Teams. Her work has been recognized by awards from organizations including the Academy of Management, Small Group Research, and the International Association for Conflict Management.
Professor Mannix teaches and consults with Executives and organizations nationally and from around the globe. She served as an Associate Editor of the Academy of Management Review, and now serves on the editorial boards of the Administrative Science Quarterly and Organization Science. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Society, the Society for Organizational Behavior, and the Academy of Management.
