How does it work?

Volunteer members are truly the lifeblood of the Academy of Management—governing, leading, and managing initiatives that connect thousands of management scholars around the world. AOM's unique and expansive volunteer structure is core to how it operates. A healthy and vibrant volunteer community emerges each year to facilitate the work of the Academy’s Divisions and Interest Groups, committees and task forces, online and extended communities, meetings, and publications. Volunteers on the Board of Governors provide leadership and strategic guidance for organizational-wide issues and opportunities. Through these efforts, AOM realizes its mission, advances its vision, and serves the broad community of scholars.

What is the Board and what is its function?

The Board of Governors , AOM's primary governing body, holds legal and fiduciary accountability for the association. The Board is also responsible for setting AOM’s strategic direction and for policy development. The Board is comprised of 14 elected members: 5 officers who rotate through a succession of 5 roles and 9 Representatives at Large, who each serve staggered three-year terms. AOM's Executive Director and Secretary-Treasurer, serves as an ex officio member of the Board without vote. Board volunteers transition from one role to the next following the close of the Annual Meeting each year.

What kind of work does the Board do?

The Board sets and refines policies, considers the evolving needs of the association, and guides AOM’s mission, vision, and strategic direction with and through members. This work is done with the help of board committees that bring recommendations to the full Board for decision-making.

Board committees include: Journals Committee (JC), Ethics Committee (ETH), Committee on Publishing Portfolio (CPP), Specialized Conferences Committee (SCC) and the Division and Interest Group Relations Committee (DIGR). The Board also engages with and oversees other AOM leade rship groups, such as our 26 Division and Interest Groups and AOM Journals , editorial teams, and a host of committees and activity functions.

How can AOM members participate in the nomination and election process for the Board of Governors?

There are two timeframes for member action. The first is the Board’s open call for nominations, which opens each September, followed by the election cycle in mid-April to mid-May each year. 2022 elections are currently open for three new Representatives-at-Large and a new Vice President-Elect and Program Chair-Elect.
