The Year-end Issue

The year 2020 impacted everyone around the world. The Academy collectively came together in new ways and advanced AOM's driving goals of connecting members with one another while providing indispensable value and service. In this, the final issue of Academy News in 2020, we look back and reflect on the year’s activities while taking a look forward to 2021.

Perhaps the most significant impact was the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on our member community to come together for in-person events. In April, it was no longer advisable to hold the much-anticipated Specialized Conference in Mexico City, , and some components of the event were held online. In August, the in-person component of the Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada, was transitioned into a virtual event through united efforts from AOM's unflappable volunteer community.

As a community, members strengthened their commitment to scholarship by sharing and research relating to as well as other important topics on Connect@AOM. Career Services successfully transitioned the Career Fair at the Annual Meeting onto a virtual platform, offered enhanced opportunities, and saw a record number of job seekers taking advantage of Career Coaching services. The AOM journals was among the highest attended sessions of the conference, and the Division and Interest Groups embraced the change of venue—to engage scholars and offer news ways to connect with one another.

We invite you to reflect on 2020 with us as you scroll through this issue. Thank you for being a member and for your many contributions and dedication to AOM this year and every year. AOM wishes you a peaceful and restful end of the year and we look forward to the many new things that 2021 will bring to us all.

The Teaching and Learning Conference was included with conference registration in 2020, and held special relevance this year as many members were preparing to conduct virtual learning sessions of their own. One conference highlight had professional stand-up comedian, Sammy Obeid, a business school graduate and former teacher, demonstrating ways to bring humor into the classroom.

AOM President Jackie Coyle-Shapiro and President-Elect Quinetta Roberson provided closing remarks during a live session as they transitioned AOM leadership. The pair touched on their own experiences, introduced incoming Board Members, and passed the gavel virtually, with Quinetta now serving as the 76th President of the Academy of Management. Specialized Conferences Anniversary

A look back at From Startup to Scaleup: Coping with Organizational Challenges in a Volatile Business Environment, 17-19 December 2018, Tel Aviv, Israel

This event was hosted by Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, and Tel Aviv University in collaboration with the following AOM Division and Interest Groups: ENT, IM, OB, OMT, STR, and TIM. Over 350 attendees came together from more than 34 countries for three days of presentations, professional development workshops, and panel discussions. Attendees had the opportunity to immerse themselves in local culture during unique networking opportunities held at the conference hotel and in Old Jaffa.

This AOM Specialized Conference featured research on the organizational challenges of start-up firms and entrepreneurial corporations that seek to grow within and beyond their established markets. Understanding the multifaceted, complex trajectory from start-up to scale-up is not only of relevance to management practitioners, but also an important frontier for management research. The multidisciplinary conference encompassed six research perspectives, codeveloped with AOM Divisions & Interest Groups. This conference was unique given the theme and local setting in Israel, the Start-up Nation, home to the largest number of start-up companies in the world.
