AOM Scholars discuss what AI and automation mean for businesses and employees in 2023 and beyond.
Esteemed management scholar and panel moderator Jochen Menges of the University of Zurich joined panelists Melissa Valentine of Stanford University, Hila Lifshitz-Assaf of Warwick Business School, and Matt Beane of University of California Santa Barbara to discuss the Top 2023 Trends in the Future of Work on 20 March 2023 as part of the AOM Scholars On... webinar series.
Panelists engaged in a salient discussion on the future of work in the management field and the implications of AI on organizational structure and employment. The AOM Scholars shared actionable, research-based insights for organizations, practitioners, scholars, and the world-at-large.
“Right now, in the workplace, not all people are in the best place when it comes to how they feel, and yet this is increasingly important given the new type of jobs that we have… there’s really an urgent need to find more evidence-based solutions to improve how people feel at work.”
Matt Beane
University of California
“I think we need to find ways to honor more human connections as we deal with all these [new] technologies. It’s not at all obvious to me we need to sacrifice them for progress.”
Hila Lifshitz-Assaf
Warwick Business School and visiting faculty at Harvard University
“We need to start generating more narratives than what we have [on AI]. We now have two dominant narratives. One is scary, anxiety provoking, that automation is replacing us and we’re going to be jobless. The other one is we’re going to be stronger than who we are, we’re going to be augmented, wired with AI. We have to generate more narratives; reality is way more complex.”
Melissa Valentine
Stanford University
“Managers now have a lot more data and insight and possibility for surveillance. People don’t like to lose autonomy. When managers were not using heavy data systems to surveil, but to help workers learn how to measure their own decisions, the data became very empowering. Managerial control done to surveil is not effective.”

Paper Development Workshops are designed to provide authors with guidance and expertise in the development of their manuscript for potential submission to an Academy journal. Join us for these upcoming Paper Development Workshops:
The event will be led by AMP’s Editors-in-Chief Gideon Markman and Geoffrey Wood, and Associate Editors Roy Suddaby, Siri Terjesen, Bill Schulze, Peter Gianiodis, David Collings.
In this joint talk, we aim to give potential authors information about both journals to help them determine the best fit for their ideas, and to help them understand the characteristics of well-crafted ideas and proposals suitable for eventual submission to AMR and the Annals.

Cynthia's research examines the influence of formal and informal governance mechanisms, social evaluations, and individual differences on managerial decision-making and individual and organizational outcomes.
“I'm a strategy scholar, but I really research how people make decisions,” said Cynthia. “I try to understand how people make decisions in high-level organizational contexts such as top management teams and boards of directors.”
Cynthia previously served as an associate editor for Academy of Management Review. She is a member of the Managerial and Organizational Cognition, Organization and Management Theory, Research Methods, and Strategic Management Divisions of AOM.

Every article, editorial feature, and review item was written by women, or by teams that included female authors.
The issue leads with three items:
An article that theorizes how entrepreneurship education can provide important experiences for women who are survivors of violence
A brave and moving companion article exploring why the entrepreneurship article was personally relevant research
An editorial introduction from Assoc. Ed. Danna Greenberg that explores how these experiences may require us to think differently about our work as editors
In cases in which results (whether present or not) may have important theoretical or practical implications, scholars are encouraged to follow a Registered Report submission approach.
