AOM 2024 On-site Health and Safety Information

As the 84th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management (AOM 2024) gets underway, we are collaborating with and monitoring updates from our conference and the City of Chicago to ensure that safety precautions are in place for the on-site meeting. We ask that you partner with us by following the appropriate guidelines and procedures to ensure everyone’s safety. By attending, you understand and commit to following and respecting these measures.

City Alerts

Sign up for updates with City of Chicago Alerts; you can use your hotel address to receive local information about emergency alerts and weather in the area.

Health

COVID protocols are no longer in effect. AOM will make required changes should local, state, or federal government agencies require protective measures such as masking, proof of vaccination or testing but, please practice common sense regarding COVID-19 protocols during the meeting. If you are feeling unwell, we kindly ask that you stay in your hotel room. Additionally, if you prefer to attend while taking extra precautions, consider bringing a mask to wear during the meeting.

Emergency Medical Needs

You can use the First Aid provided onsite at the Hyatt Hotel or review the In Case of Emergency information here for urgent care and pharmacies nearby.

Facility Security

AOM works with each facilities security team to manage emergencies based on their protocols. In the event of an emergency in one of AOM’s meeting locations, listen for a public announcement in the facility for directions.

911 Local Police for Emergencies

Dial “911” from your mobile phone ONLY if the situation is a critical life-threatening medical or other emergency that may cause bodily harm.  Then IMMEDIATELY alert the facility security.

Dial 911 in the United States from any phone including mobile phones.

  • Serious medical problem such as seizure, chest pain, bleeding
  • Life threatening situations such as large-scale protest, fights or any situation involving civil disobedience and especially those involving multiple people and/or weapons
  • In the event of a fire

Individual Attendee Security

There is an expectation that all meeting attendees will abide by the professional standards of AOM. Please read the AOM Code of Ethics and the AOM Harassment Policy for expected and professional code of conduct at AOM events.

In the event of an unsafe situation, attendees, volunteers, and staff should never put themselves in harm’s way or respond to an angry or threatening individual without help, preferably from security.  You may require facility security for a minor disturbance, an uncredentialed individual who should not be in attendance, peaceful protest that interrupts business and was not part of the session or event taking place. You can find security guards floating at each facility along with hotel and AOM staff or vendor staff at each location.

Each meeting room at all AOM facilities will have a document at the podium or front of the room that includes information about what to do for certain situations.  For security dial the number listed using a house phone.

In the Event of Harassment at an Onsite AOM Event

It can be difficult to know what to do if you witness harassment. Consider the following but always maintain personal safety.

  1. Distract: Start a conversation with the target (or harasser) to distract them.
  2. Delegate: Get help, each AOM facility has conference staff, security and hotel staff (at offsite events seek out facility staff/general manager).
  3. Delay: After the incident, check in with the target to see if they need help.
  4. Document: Take video footage or screen shots of the harassment.
  5. Direct: Speak up about the harassment as it’s happening.
If you are the target of harassment:

  1. Your own personal safety is most important. Consider removing yourself from the situation or asking someone nearby for help.
  2. Take detailed notes of the incident. Include what happened, when and where it happened, if there were any witnesses, and any other useful information you might remember. You can also write down names of any people who later help you in an official capacity.
  3. Reporting, if you decide to report the incident.
  4. You can report the incident to the AOM. While we hope that members hold themselves to a high level of ethical conduct should you have an issue that requires attention please review AOM’s Ethics Procedures and Inquiries..
  5. If you are the victim of a crime, it is your choice whether or not to involve the local police.
