AOM Scholars discuss what AI and automation mean for businesses and employees in 2023 and beyond.

Esteemed management scholar and panel moderator Jochen Menges of the University of Zurich joined panelists Melissa Valentine of Stanford University, Hila Lifshitz-Assaf of Warwick Business School, and Matt Beane of University of California Santa Barbara to discuss the Top 2023 Trends in the Future of Work on 20 March 2023 as part of the AOM Scholars On... webinar series.

Panelists engaged in a salient discussion on the future of work in the management field and the implications of AI on organizational structure and employment. The AOM Scholars shared actionable, research-based insights for organizations, practitioners, scholars, and the world-at-large.

Jochen Menges

University of Zurich

“Right now, in the workplace, not all people are in the best place when it comes to how they feel, and yet this is increasingly important given the new type of jobs that we have… there’s really an urgent need to find more evidence-based solutions to improve how people feel at work.”

Matt Beane

University of California

“I think we need to find ways to honor more human connections as we deal with all these [new] technologies. It’s not at all obvious to me we need to sacrifice them for progress.”

Hila Lifshitz-Assaf

Warwick Business School and visiting faculty at Harvard University

“We need to start generating more narratives than what we have [on AI]. We now have two dominant narratives. One is scary, anxiety provoking, that automation is replacing us and we’re going to be jobless. The other one is we’re going to be stronger than who we are, we’re going to be augmented, wired with AI. We have to generate more narratives; reality is way more complex.”

Melissa Valentine

Stanford University

“Managers now have a lot more data and insight and possibility for surveillance. People don’t like to lose autonomy. When managers were not using heavy data systems to surveil, but to help workers learn how to measure their own decisions, the data became very empowering. Managerial control done to surveil is not effective.”
