Past President, 2022-2023
Amy Hillman served as the 78th President of the Academy of Management during the 2022-2023 term. During the Academy’s Annual Meeting in Boston, Hillman delivered her 2023 Presidential Address, which is available to view online.
Dear Friends,
I am pleased to introduce this 2023 Annual Report to members of the Academy of Management.
In August 2023, as is our tradition, I was passed the President’s gavel by our colleague, Amy Hillman. In the 2023 calendar year, the Academy of Management community remained steadfast in its dedication to collaboration across the globe. Our members, pillars of support for each other, demonstrated their commitment to the mission of AOM through their 2023 activities. I am excited by what we have achieved in 2023 and our upcoming opportunities for growth and development.
Leveraging the 2022 value proposition, our guiding compass for strategic action, the Academy’s Board of Governors established a Teaching Committee and a Research Methods Committee, a pivotal step towards enriching resources in these two areas of paramount importance to our members. These two Board committees are developing concepts for centralized programs and services that will help enhance AOM’s value proposition in these areas, as well as conducting engagement efforts across our broad “tent” of scholars to ensure relevance for members.
Aligned with AOM’s vision to “inspire and enable a better world through our scholarship and teaching about management and organizations,” we are introducing Vision 2030. Vision 2030 will comprise a significant and critical portion of the Board’s work over the coming years, paving the way for enhancing AOM’s membership and strengthening our value proposition through exciting new content development.
In the spirit of community, we gathered in-person for the Academy of Management’s 83rd Annual Meeting: Putting the Worker Front and Center in Boston, Massachusetts USA, from 4-8 August 2023. We were happy to welcome 10,000 + members from more than 80 countries to the city of Boston. Seeing all our friends and colleagues in one place continues to offer motivation and inspiration for new initiatives.
On the publishing front, AOM’s portfolio of journals remained competitive with their emphasis on building author, reviewer, and content services. Dedicated volunteers have launched or continued innovative programs such as AMJ Radio Live, the AMR Bridge Reviewer Program, and AMD Discoveries-through-Prose, finding new ways to use technology and social media to amplify the dissemination of our scholarly research beyond academia. Consistent with our goal of ethical professional practices across all journals, every article accepted going forward will now have the name of the associate editor that accepted the article listed on the paper. Finally, our Board of Governors confirmed discontinuing a print version of our journals, resulting in substantial cost savings and sustainability for the organization.
An exciting new publishing venture is also coming soon – AOM and Elsevier have entered into an agreement to explore new publishing opportunities for AOM members and the field. In addition, we are pursuing agreements with outside organizations (KPMG and PWC) to curate our content for use within their organizations. Stay tuned as we learn from these and other exploratory new content initiatives on the horizon.
I’m especially proud to highlight an important initiative that spans our community. At its August 2023 meeting in Boston, the AOM Board of Governors voted to adopt a revised Code of Ethics for our association. We thank the Ethics Education Committee for spearheading the effort to update our Code with contributions from the Board’s Ethics Committee, the Ethics Ombuds Committee, and the Ethics Adjudication Committee. All members ascribe to the AOM Code of Ethics as a condition of membership. Our AOM Code of Ethics contains two parts—principles that guide professional conduct and enforced standards that apply to member and non-member behavior when participating in AOM activities. The Code is overseen by a network of members committed to its purpose and who serve as important resources to members.
Using the revised Code as a catalyst, our Ethics volunteers were able to inject new energy into Ethics Education and incorporate best practices into conversation across our Divisions and Interest Group leaders, editorial teams, program volunteers, and others who are partners in upholding our professional principles and standards of conduct.
In addition to showcasing our various volunteer accomplishments, our Annual Report is a platform to express our sincere appreciation for the invaluable service of our volunteers. It also shines a spotlight on the Academy’s awards and recognition program, highlighting professional achievements, exceptional service, and outstanding contributions to the field of management and organizations.
Looking ahead, I eagerly anticipate the development of our Vision 2030 strategies, in particular our outreach to build AOM community among regions where membership has historically been low, and content outreach to extend our scholarship’s impact. On behalf of the Board of Governors and AOM leadership, we sincerely appreciate the myriad contributions of our global volunteers and members. As stated above, your dedication and commitment are pivotal to our Academy, and we are deeply thankful for your ongoing support and efforts.
