The Organizational Behavior Division's

Doctoral Student Buddy Initiative

The OB Division recently completed an initiative aimed at supporting 1st year PhD students. The program paired 170 students with peers from other countries under the guidance of a senior OB doctoral student to encourage communication and collaboration.

Launched in January 2021, the Doctoral Student Group Buddy Initiative allowed 1st year PhD students who are at the earliest stages of their academic career, and have not had the opportunity to interact, build meaningful connections, network and exchange ideas virtually with their fellow doctoral student colleagues or professors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the initiatives’ kick-off session, a panel of leading OB academics from the OB Division Executive Board offered their advice and insights about how to get started and make the best use of a buddy support group.

“I took part in the AOM OB Buddy Event today and I would like to thank you for this initiative. I didn't know what to expect from today's meeting but it really gave me hope we are not alone out there.”

“I just wanted to thank you and all who have been involved in today’s session on the OB buddy initiative. It has been great and definitely made my day – if not week!”

"Based on students' positive reactions and enthusiasm in their buddy groups, we're all very happy to see that our initiative really helped them in challenging times. Also, I feel very inspired to see so many senior students sign up and volunteer to lead the groups."

The initiative was designed as a one-time event to provide support to students during the COVID-19 pandemic, but given the positive feedback it received, the OB division may look to continue it in the future.
